Cosmetic/Plastic Surgeon Sheila A. Bond, M.D., F.A.C.S.
The face is our most visible feature that through expression and appearance conveys what and how we feel. Facial aging includes a loss of skin elasticity and firmness, sagging tissue, wrinkles and a general look of tiredness. These too visible signs of aging can greatly impact how we feel about ourselves and how others see us. Even a person who is animated and energetic can appear tired or sad due to aging in the mid face, jaw and neck. Now more and more women and men are appreciating that a facelift (or rhytidectomy) could be the answer for them. The “plastic” or pulled look that was the signature of a facelift of old is no longer the current result. In fact, often no one can tell that you have had a facelift, yet you can look up to ten years younger.
If you are bothered by the signs of aging in your face, a facelift may be right for you. It can improve the skin, smooth out deep cheek folds, jowls and loose, sagging skin around the neck that is often associated with age. A facelift can correct sagging facial skin and muscles, remove excess fat and restore firmness to create a more youthful, rested and vibrant appearance with uplifted contours and improved tone in facial skin and underlying muscle. Patients are reassured to know that a facelift will not change their basic appearance, but will restore it to a younger version of itself that will then continue to age naturally over time. If needed, other procedures can be added to a facelift; a browlift will correct a sagging or deeply furrowed brow and upper or lower eyelid lift can rejuvenate aging eyes.
Performed under general anesthesia, a facelift, also known as rhytidectomy, removes the excess skin and fatty tissue around the jaw and neck is removed and the skin is pulled back to reveal a tighter, more youthful appearance. Dr. Sheila Bond will place tiny dissolvable sutures along the line of the ear that will be very difficult to detect after healing. The surgery usually lasts approximately three hours and is performed on an outpatient basis.
Bruising and swelling usually fades within two weeks and after a few days you will be permitted to wear camouflage makeup if you wish. After about two weeks, most people will return to work. As with any facial surgery, healing continues for six to nine months. After the recuperation period many of our patients say, “I wish I’d done it sooner.” The average facelift done today may last from 5 to 15 years, and follow-up procedures can be performed to keep you looking as good as you can for many more years.
