Are your eyes projecting an appearance of you looking tired, sad or older than you are and feel? Eyelid surgery is a good procedure to address and correct drooping upper lids, remove puffy “bags” below your eyes and tighten the lower eyelid skin. Excess skin, fat and even muscle can be removed to create a tighter, more youthful appearance, making you look more rested and alert.

A primary reason for sagging lids is simply due to the progression of age. As everything droops, so do the eyebrows. As the outer parts of the eyelid droop, the skin of the upper lids will look saggy, as if you had developed extra skin that was not there several years before. Trimming this “extra” skin can drastically improve the droopy look. Another reason for tired looking eyes is downward migrating eyelid fat. This fat layer is usually held back by a thin wall of fibrous tissue which can sag over time. This fat can bulge with age creating undereye “bags”. Blepharoplasty trims this excess fat and tightens the wall, restoring a youthful contour.

If you feel that the eyes looking back at you in the mirror are old and tired-looking, or if people are asking if you had a good night’s sleep, an eyelid lift can give you dramatically younger eyes.

The Surgery

The surgeons at Bond Plastic Surgery advise their patients that eyelid lifts (upper and lower) can be done separately or together. When done alone, an upper or lower eyelid lift surgery can typically be completed in less than an hour under general anesthesia in a hospital setting.*

In the upper eyelids, the incision follows the crease of the lid. Through this incision, excess skin and fatty tissue are removed, and the scar is hidden in the natural crease of the eye. In the lower eyelids, the incision is made just below the lower lashes. Fat pads that cause puffiness can be removed or redistributed to remove bulges, and underlying muscle can be tightened if needed. Healing of incisions will take 5 to 10 days and sutures will self-dissolve. Any discoloration can be covered by makeup during the first week, and the scars will eventually fade to a thin, nearly invisible white line.*

The procedure may be covered by insurance if it can be demonstrated that the droopy eyelids are substantially hindering the patient’s peripheral vision.

Other Options

For patients with puffiness under the eyes, injections of a dermal filler, such as Restylane®, Juvéderm® or other advanced facial fillers, into the adjacent areas, can temporarily reduce the appearance of undereye “bags”. Although not a permanent solution, the result is a more alert and youthful look around the eyes without the commitment of surgery.

An eyelid lift will reveal a smooth, firm contour of the eyelids and an appearance that matches the way you feel inside – bright-eyed and youthful. Call our office to schedule a convenient consultation with one of our board certified plastic surgeons at: (973) 509-0007.
