Procedure of the Month - Blepharoplasty - Give Your Eyes a Lift

Are your eyes making you look tired, sad or older than you really feel? Eyelid surgery can correct drooping upper lids, remove puffy bags below your eyes and tighten the lower eyelid skin. Excess skin, fat and even muscle can be removed to create a tighter, more youthful appearance, making you look more rested and alert.

In the upper eyelids, the incision follows the crease of the lid. Through this incision, excess skin and fatty tissue are removed and the scar is hidden in the natural crease of the eye. In the lower eyelids, the incision is made just below the lower lashes. Fat pads that cause puffiness can be removed or redistributed to remove bulges, and underlying muscle can be tightened if needed. A very effective pre/post operative bruise control regimen can be prescribed to keep bruising to a minimum. Healing of incisions will take 5 to 10 days at which time any sutures will be removed, if necessary. Any discoloration can be covered by makeup during the first week, and the scars will eventually fade to a thin, nearly invisible line. Blepharoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis in a hospital under general anesthesia. The procedure may be covered by insurance if it can be demonstrated that the droopy eyelids are substantially hindering the patient's peripheral vision. An Eyelid Lift will reveal a smooth, firm contour of the eyelids and an appearance that matches the way you feel inside - bright-eyed and youthful.

Fat Transfer to Breasts - Wave of the Future?

Dr. Bond recently attended a symposium to learn techniques of fat grafting to the breasts at St. Barnabas Medical Center. Women have always wished that they could move their fat from one body part to another. The success of the Brazilian Butt Lift has spurred patients to consider new areas of plastic surgery, one being the use of fat transfer as an alternative to breast implants. Autologous fat (your own) can be used to add volume to breasts and create better cleavage. It can also be used to fine tune breast reconstruction and disguise "rippling" edges of breast augmentations in very slim patients.

Fat grafting to the breasts is a two part procedure. First, the fat is harvested from the abdomen, waist or thighs; then the harvested fat is carefully injected to enlarge and reshape the breasts.

Currently, there are advantages and disadvantages to this procedure. Some patients prefer to use their own body fat rather than introducing a foreign body into their breasts, Since there is no need to create a pocket under the muscle for an implant, there are no potential problems with capsular contracture. With the injection of fat, the breasts can be sculpted and shaped. The fat harvest will also trim an area of the body by removing areas of unwanted fat. The new breasts feel soft and very natural.

Probably the greatest disadvantage is that the fat transfer can only add one cup size to the existing breast as opposed to the large range of possible sizes with augmentation.

Many scientific studies have begun over the last few years to study the long term effects of fat grafting to the breast. One area of consideration is the readability of future mammograms.

Will fat grafting replace traditional breast augmentations? Clearly not yet, given the current limitations, but we all love to see new and less invasive procedures and more options to look fabulous.

Bye Bye Brown Spots- Cosmelan - New Procedure

Hate those nasty "age spots" and darkened areas that are cropping up on your face, hands and chest? Cosmelan is the new regimen of choice to lighten those areas and help regain your unblemished skin tone.

Cosmelan is a depigmentation agent which acts by decreasing melanin from the skin. Melanin is responsible for the darkening of the skin. It works on all skin types and colorations, since it only lightens the pigmented areas without changing the normal skin. Patients are loving Cosmelan for its ease of use and application. It has no downtime and no skin peeling or dryness. The Cosmelan treatment begins with the application of the Cosmelan 1 mask in the office and a follow-up spot treatment about one month later, It also includes two products for after care: Cosmelan 2 maintenance cream which will continue to lighten the pigmented areas and Hydra Vita Vitamin K Cream to soothe the treated areas.

The initial treatment with Cosmelan is performed in the office. After a thorough cleansing to remove all skin oils, the Cosmelan 1 mask is applied to the entire face. The mask is left on for a total of 4-8 hours depending on your skin type. After the initial application time has elapsed, the mask is removed with water and a neutral cleanser. Immediately following the cleansing of the face, the mesoestetic Hydra-vital factor K cream is applied.

The second stage is the home maintenance program. It consists of the daily application of the Cosmelan 2 cream. The cream is applied 2-3 times a day, for the first two weeks, then only once a day. Use of a sunscreen is also advised, as prolonged sun exposure will cause problem areas to recur.

In most cases, the skin blemishes start to disappear within the first week after starting treatment. The darker the skin, the longer the time it takes for the spots to disappear. The skin starts to appear shiny and healthy in 2-3 weeks. In most individuals the darkened spots are not visible in 4-6 weeks.

Cosmelan can be used on: areas of aged, sun damaged or hyperpigmented skin, facial blemishes from excessive pigmentation, melasma and cholasma. Even acne scars will benefits from the program. It can be used on the face, chest and décolleté areas, hands, legs and most areas of the body.

If you're interested in starting Summer with a clean slate of skin, we’re offering $50 off Cosmelan packages in April and May.
