Have you noticed that early wrinkles and facial folds are making you look older than you feel? Have you spent enough money on expensive moisturizers that claim to remove wrinkles and don’t do a thing? The bad news is that our skin is definitely going to age; the good news is that there’s something you can do about it. What many of our patients have learned is that the only way to fill a wrinkle is from the inside out with one of the fabulous new dermal fillers like Restylane® and Perlane®.

The base of these products is hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance that is present in all of the tissues of the body. Its function is to provide fullness and elasticity in the skin and underlying tissues. They contain no animal protein, and need no allergy testing since their ingredients are already present in all the tissues in the body. Over time, skin loses hyaluronic acid, and as it diminishes, the skin loses volume, increasing the inevitability of wrinkles and folds.

Restylane® is the world’s best selling dermal filler, and with good reason. It is well tolerated, non-surgical and lasts around 6 to 8 months. And most importantly, injected under the skin, it restores volume beautifully correcting moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds in the naso-labial lines (corners of the nose to the corners of the mouth), marionette lines (“comma” lines down from the corners of the mouth) and “cigarette” lines (vertical lines above the upper lip). These products can fill almost any wrinkle or area of underlying fat loss that occurs naturally with the progression of age, leaving the newly filled areas plumped from underneath, yet smooth on the surface. They can also fill in the areas around undereye “bags” (see “Bye, Bye, Bags”) as well as “crow’s feet” lines.

Both Restylane® and Perlane® are both comprised of hyaluronic acid. The difference between the products lies in the size of the gel particles; since Perlane® has larger gel particles, it is more appropriate for injection into a deeper layer of the skin in order to volumize skin for structural support in filling deeper lines or wrinkles. Perlane® can also be used to fill cheek depressions and soften the appearance of unsightly jowls on the jawline, making them much less noticeable in appearance. Restylane is better suited for finer, more superficial wrinkles or to maintain the results of a previous Perlane® injection.

As an additional bonus, both products are included in the Restylane® Rewards program, a very generous bonus plan that gives cash back rewards every time you have a filler treatment. Why not talk to Dr. Sheila Bond about using Restylane® or Perlane® to obtain the results you desire? The availability of both products provides your physician with different treatment options. She will decide which product is right for you.
