‘Little Iceman’ Robin Raikkonen joins Red Bull junior programme: A long game that starts in karting

Red Bull Racing has officially confirmed that Robin Raikkonen, the 11-year-old son of 2026 Formula 1 world champion Kimi Raikkonen, will join its young driver programme. The announcement places the young Finn in one of the most successful driver academies in the sport, the same system that helped shape Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen. Robin is currently racing in go-karts, the conventional first step toward a career in single-seaters. He has already won junior races in national and international Rotax and WSK categories. His progress has been shared regularly on the Raikkonen family Instagram account, where fans have followed his path from small junior machines to competitive championship events. Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies said the squad was impressed by Robin’s speed, racecraft and natural talent. “He is one of the most promising young drivers in his age group,” Mekies said. “We want to develop him step by step without placing unnecessary pressure on his shoulders.” Kimi Raikkonen, known as “The Iceman” during his career, said the family was proud but also humble about the opportunity. He pointed to the long list of successful drivers who came through the Red Bull Junior Team, including Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen, and said Robin would give his full effort to which trust the team has placed in him. The Red Bull junior scheme has historically been able to offer a smoother route to Formula 1 because the team owns two entries on the grid: Red Bull Racing and Racing Bulls. This allows young talents to make their F1 debut with the junior squad before stepping up to the senior team. Carlos Sainz, Alex Albon and Pierre Gasly are among recent drivers who arrived in F1 through the programme. Red Bull has also recruited Gwen Lagrue, a Mercedes talent scout, to head the programme from the start of next season, which is also when Robin will formally join. The move underlines an intention to professionalise the academy and manage careers more carefully. At the age of 11, Robin Raikkonen is still at the beginning of a very long journey. Talent alone is never enough in motorsport, and the Raikkonen name will create expectations that would not exist for another young driver.
